Challenges of Globalization on State Sovriegnty
“Globalization and increased interdependence in the international system present serious challenges to state sovereignty.” Like the many other controversial debates surrounding globalization, such as whether or not it is actually occurring for the first time in history, its exact long and short-term ramifications, and its sociological implications (Guillen, 27), the exact effect of globalization on state sovereignty is also uncertain. In order to understand this nebulous position, it is necessary to first define state and sovereignty, then globalization, before examining the different political views which fuel the debate by presenting solutions, advantages, and benefits to be gained by the state from globalization. From this analysis, serious concerns and challenges to the state of sovereignty from globalization and increased interdependence will then be determined.
